Beginners: Uphill & Downhill Hacks
The Uphill Technique:
- Take It Easy Going Up: When you’re going uphill, try to keep a steady and not too fast pace. Going too fast can make you tired quickly. Keep a consistent speed so you have enough energy for the whole trek.
- Take Small Steps: When climbing, take smaller steps. This helps your muscles work better and keeps you steady. Don’t stretch your legs too much; shorter steps work best.
- Try Trekking Poles: If you can, use trekking poles. They’re like extra support for your walk. Adjust them to be longer when you’re going uphill, and they’ll help you keep your balance.
- Lean a Bit Forward: When going up, lean slightly forward. This helps with balance and makes it easier for you to keep going. Keep your back straight, and use your stomach muscles to help.
The Downhill Technique:
- Go Slow Downhill: Going downhill can be tricky, so take your time. Walk at a controlled pace—no need to rush, but let gravity do its work. This way, you avoid slipping and falling. When I was a beginner, I learned it in a hard way!
- Use Your Stomach Muscles: Tighten your stomach muscles when going downhill. It gives you extra support and helps your knees. A strong stomach also helps you keep your balance.
- Bend Your Knees: Follow this technique and thank me later! Bend your knees a little. This helps absorb the shock and makes it easier on your joints. It’s especially important on steep slopes. I did not know this technique before, and I used to have a shaky knee every time I finished my trek.
- Keep Using Trekking Poles: Trekking poles aren’t just for going up. Use them when going downhill, too. Plant them ahead of you – they’ll act like extra legs, keeping you stable.
